Puff Uno, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune, for Design House Stockholm
Add one, add two, or say hello to a whole herd of soft, puffy, and easy-to-rearrange furniture. One of Claesson Koivisto Rune is a friendly reminder of nature in three sizes: small, medium and XL. Of course, you can sit on this furniture-like mushroom. Or use it to stretch out, or as a backrest when you sit on the floor. One will cater to young and old in any public or private space that craves flexible and easy-to-rearrange furniture.
If furniture typologies have been stuck in rigid forms for too long, we now yearn for new and open-minded approaches. Say hello to a flexibility that allows spaces to be reborn again and again. And also, to furniture endowed with character that will give life to any type of interior with objects that are almost alive. Uno's rounded frame is soft to the touch and will create a playful mood with earthy colors of cream, brown and green – both individually and as a set. One is Japanese design at its core: Scandinavian minimalism combined with full-blown Japanese tactile craftsmanship, and a hallmark of Swedish architecture and design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune.
One was designed for a hotel where flexibility is paramount,” says Eero Koivisto. “Sitting in a backless seat, like in the Far East, you will also adopt more active body language. Eero Koivisto notes that benches and stools are a common feature in Japan, particularly in restaurants and bars, and they enforce an attentive seating position, contributing to lively discussions.
Claesson Koivisto Rune renovated the legendary Grand Hotel Terminus in Bergen, Norway, and created Uno as a bean bag for the Amundsen Whiskey bar. The warm amber interior framed by wooden beams and paneling, along with impressive tall stained glass windows, was to maintain its original ambiance. Almost identical to when the explorer Amundsen 1928 gave his press conference by the great fireplace, before disappearing on his last rescue mission in the Arctic. One complements Finn Juhls Pelican chairs alongside plush sofas and small tables in the historic setting, allowing for an even more easily reconfigurable space.
One is no exception to the care and attention to detail. A finely worked wooden structure supports a filling material of different densities: firm but soft. And there's obvious pragmatism in the ease with which the beanbag can be moved and how the recessed base allows the foot to be raised from a sitting position. One will allow both homes and public spaces to be adorned in new ways. We sit differently, closer to the floor, bringing children and adults together, in a way that was quite rare in the past. Furniture pieces that allow a new flexibility are urgently needed. Design objects should be friendly, not hard, sharp or aggressive, says Eero Koivisto, design should make you feel comfortable and at ease.
