The history of Ton dates back to the mid-19th century, when Michael Thonet founded the factory in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in what is now the Czech Republic. His revolutionary No. 14 chair, shipped disassembled worldwide, marked a milestone in the industry for its innovative design and production. After World War II, the factory was separated from the Thonet Mundus group, and in 1953, a new Czechoslovak company was established under the name TON (Továrny na Ohýbaný Nábytek – Bentwood Furniture Factory).
Today, over 160 years of tradition, steeped in innovation and sophisticated molding techniques, underpin Ton's leadership. Every day, the team perfects the art of wood bending and the handcrafting of chairs and tables. Each piece passes through twenty pairs of hands, where highly skilled artisans attend to every detail, from material selection to final assembly. The wood is sourced within a 200 km radius, choosing only the finest to maintain the highest possible quality standards.
The bending process, a hallmark of the Ton brand, is executed with extraordinary precision. Beech wood, ideal for this method, is steamed at 100°C for the precise time required for its thickness, and then two skilled benders manually shape it, securing it in the historic shoe invented by Thonet. The quality control inspector oversees each bend to ensure a flawless, seamless shape. This meticulous approach is what makes Ton's chairs, armchairs, stools, and furniture in general beautiful, functional, and truly durable pieces that honor their history and project design into the future.
